Death tarot card love meaning

The meaning of Death in a tarot love reading

Is Death a good tarot card to get in a question about your love life?

The answer to this question depends on whether you are single or in a relationship.

If you are single then the Death tarot card can mean an end to being single. Death tarot card signifies what the past as well as what is changing. In a love reading, it can denote your past is resurfacing again. An old flame or friend will re-enter your life.

If you are in a relationship then there is a significant change in the relationship. You might find that you entered into the relationship too soon and you are having second thoughts about it.

The major block to a relationship defined by Death tarot card is that there is little compatibility between you and your partner. This, in turn, creates a breakdown in communication.

Learn the traditional meaning of Death tarot card here.

Death tarot card speaks of a relationship where the couple becomes strangers to each other. They exist together out of habit rather than love. People in a Death relationship often have a common passion and interest that keep them together, and it can be the only thing that keeps them together. Without it, they might choose to go their separate ways.

On a brighter note, Death tarot card can speak of the next stage in your life together. It can mean retirement or slow down the pace of life. It can also mean you are moving in a new direction and leaving an old life behind. Look at the other cards in the tarot spread for clues what Death is telling you. Death tarot card in a love reading can denote that the man in the relationship is replacing his mother figure in the partnership. The partner often subconsciously takes on the mother role without knowing it and it creates an imbalanced relationship.

If you are single and asking about love and you receive the Death tarot card it can as I mentioned earlier denote an end to being single. The only issue is; Death tarot card often signifies when someone wants a relationship so much they jump in too quickly. They convinced themselves their partner is ideal when in fact they might not be compatible at all. When reality hits you might be over-committed. One of you might have taken on the role as the mother/nurturer which creates a co-dependent relationship. You might want to go on a few more dates before you move in together.

Death tarot card love meanings summary

The Death tarot card speaks of a relationship that must evolve to survive, or else you might fall into a role where you feel like you have lost your identity. Death tarot card in a love reading can also be a sign of hanging onto the past or having the past re-visit you in the form of an old flame.

If you are in a relationship this card can be a sign of entering into the next phase in your life together.

    Dear Inger,

I’d like to ask you about a spread.
After a year, we met and talked again with my ex. It was very good, i felt the old flame between us, but there was not any sequel. (I want it, but i took the first step, the second should take him)

I know, yes or no – questions are not realy good idea, but first I asked my cards: 1. Will I ever hear from him, 2. and if yes, what kind of situation will it be-date, random meeting, will it be pleasant, etc.
I got the Lovers upright and the Death reversed…

And the another question: What’s our long time future?
I got the Justice reversed, and The Magician upright.
    Interesting combos…. :O

Thank you very much in advance!

  2. Inger Bråthen June 15, 2016 at 8:42 pm

Hi Neve. The cards are telling you that you do have a strong connection, and Magician indicates he is a soulmate connection. Death reversed can mean that timing is off at the moment, or has been in the past. Justice reversed can indicate that yours or his living situation is the block in moving forward, so that is what you can work on to shift to make room for this relationship to materialise…

    Hey Inger!
I have a question. I pulled two cards, one for my boyfriend that I have been together for 3 years and one for a friend that I am starting to develop feelings for recently.
I got Ten of Pentacles for my boyfriend and reversed death for the friend.

The first card about my boyfriend is so on point, as it does feel like he is the one, but the next card confuses me because I feel that the death reverse card is suggesting that my relationship with my boyfriend is dead but that I’m hesitant to move on.
It also feels like the card is not talking so much about my connection with the friend but about the situation with my boyfriend.

can you tell me how you see those two cards in this situation?

  4. Inger Bråthen August 22, 2016 at 8:52 pm

Death reversed can mean there is not any real potential with the friend. If you want to investigate further, you can do the celtic cross relationship spread (to get more information):
    Cheers, Ingie

Hello dear Inger I have recently taken tarot cards of mine , and my sister turned them for me who loves me so much and has best intentions towards me.
I took them for enlightenment in the case of my relationship with my beloved woman and I did not ask any specific question before turning the cards.
I just wanted to see what is going on around us overall.
Well my cards set was like this with that method when they where turned.

I have put the high resolution pic on the link above that I took at the end so you can see what they are.(I mean the names are written under each card)
I will be very happy If you tell me what is the meaning of them together?
    Thank you dear Inger.

  7. Cassie February 1, 2017 at 4:59 pm

Hello Inger, I pulled a death card in a one card draw questioning the outcome of my relationship. My boyfriend and I are about to move in together…things are pretty good. A few issues here and there , minor ones though. Could this card signify death of our old lives and new beginnings because we will be moving in next month? Or should I question things greatly? I’m so worried now!!!

  8. Jessica Lovett February 4, 2017 at 6:17 am

Hi, Cassie. Death card means your life is changing and it is the end of the old way you used to live 🙂

  10. Helen February 7, 2017 at 5:23 pm

Hey Inger, I mine is really confusing, it’s the question of a new relationship, we just kinda like each other. can you please help me?
is it going to be a new beginning?
are we going to be well together? death
should I choose to be with this person?
it looks good in a way but death still makes me a bit worried 🙁

  11. Inger Bråthen February 7, 2017 at 10:47 pm

Hi, Death can mean you should wait a bit before you get married. The time might not be ideal just yet.

  12. Yun February 8, 2017 at 2:09 am

hi Inger, Can you please help me with the reading regarding whether I should be with this guy?
    the spread is as follows
is this a new begining? -sun
will we be well together? – death
should I be with this person? – star
they are all upright, It seems they are positive but death looks pretty troublesome

  13. Inger Bråthen February 11, 2017 at 3:10 pm

Hi, I believe a relationship with this person will create a big lifestyle change, therefore, you got death. I feel like you will think about this for a while, because I feel like, when you make a commitment, you commit wholeheartedly, thus you don’t make commitments unless you are absolutely sure. I believe you will end up following your heart, and if you are truly in love with him, you will commit.

  14. Inger Bråthen February 19, 2017 at 2:37 pm

Hi, Helen. The Death card can mean you will be able to help each other heal from wounds in the past.

  15. Trinity May 9, 2017 at 4:28 pm

Hi Inger. In a question about how he feels about our re-connection(we had a split up recently),shows up death.I understand that he May feels that he want to continue his life without me.Also in question what he feels about me shows up reversed moon. An what to do about to succeed our re-connection shows temperance and reverse emperor. I’m a little bit confused. I would like veeery much to help me. Love Trinity

  16. Inger Bråthen May 10, 2017 at 7:16 am

Hi, Trinity. You might not be able to influence this situation much as you are getting all the major arcana cards which denote that things happened the way they were meant to and you are possibly most likely meant to be with someone else.

  17. Pamela Laurence May 23, 2017 at 10:52 am

Hello Inger, can you help me interpret the card meanings? Yesterday I had a fight with someone I’m close with (I think I like this person a little), and after apoligizing he just doesn’t speak with me anymore. Today I decide to do a reading with the first question is “What is his feeling to me?” and it shows Death upright, and the second question is “If I still want to make it right, what should I do?” with Two of Swords upright as the answer. Thankyou in advance Inger.

  18. Inger Bråthen May 25, 2017 at 8:20 am

It is always a good idea to find out how people act in arguments because real friends always bounce back 🙂 Death card can mean he is very stubborn. Two of swords is telling you to not do anything at this stage, as you have already apologized. Keep the peace, don’t rock the boat, and focus on your life and your happiness.

  19. Mo June 13, 2017 at 4:05 am

What does temperance and death mean in a love reading? Thank you!

  20. Inger Bråthen June 14, 2017 at 10:14 am

Temperance with death can mean dealing with differences in your personalities.

  21. Trinity June 27, 2017 at 8:40 pm

Hi again Inger Thanks for your reply🙂. I m beginner in tarot and I used only the major arcana(mistake as I understand) for this spread.I recently bought my first whole tarot deck . Would you recommend make love celtic cross spread again with new tarot deck for more accurate results? Thanks a lot.

  22. Inger Bråthen June 29, 2017 at 10:21 am

Yes. Use the whole deck. 🙂 They add much more detail to the reading…the majors often speaks of our soul lessons and can be hard to interpret on a practical day to day level 🙂

  23. Trinity July 3, 2017 at 1:38 am

Hi Inger! As outcome shows up 6 of cups , the world, 10 of swords ,justice . what do you believe? Thanks a lot again🙂

  24. Peter Law July 14, 2017 at 1:00 pm

Hi Inger. I like this girl, but was turned down by her a few days ago when I revealed my feelings & intentions to her. From what I know there are other guys going after her too, so she has no lack of suitors. I still continue to chat with her on & off, as a friend. I did a reading on what will be the outcome of our relationship:

    (1) How you feel about yourself – The Tower
    (2) What you want most right now – Justice
    (3) Your fears – The World
    (4) What is going for you – The Moon
    (5) What is going against you – The Fool
    (6) The likely outcome – Death

Does the reading mean we are not fated?
Please advise. Thanks very much. Peter

  25. Inger Bråthen July 17, 2017 at 6:43 pm

Death can mean it is not meant to be.

  26. Peter Law July 18, 2017 at 12:08 pm

Very good day Inger. She had finally replied me after 3 days. I just did a reading again on the outcome of our relationship:

    (1) How you feel about yourself – Strength
    (2) What you want most right now – The Tower
    (3) Your fears – Wheel of Fortune
    (4) What is going for you – The Empress
    (5) What is going against you – The High Priestess
    (6) The likely outcome – The Magician

Should I disregard my previous reading? I feel that she’s like the High Priestess.. I don’t know why but, I feel so much confidence in her, even after her revelations to me… Something inside me says don’t look on her surface..
Is there a possibility that our relationship may have a chance? Does the magician as outcome signify a soulmate?
Now I just do it slow. Looking forward to your advice. Thanks Inger

  27. Inger Bråthen July 20, 2017 at 9:01 am

Hi, Peter. Are you only using Major Arcanas? If so, Try using the whole deck. Your union I feel can be very intense due to the Tower, Strenght, the High Priestess, and The Magician cards are present. They are very powerful cards and signify you have a strong connection, but it can easily become too much and chaos follows, especially if you are afraid of being yourself. I feel you will have a lot of communication, and since you have been also getting the Death card, this is a connection that can change you a lot as a person, so you must be careful not to lose yourself 🙂

  28. Peter Law July 21, 2017 at 4:09 pm

Thanks Inger 🙂 Yes, I’m using only Major Arcanas. I hope the strong connection is not just one way, as I have been the one taking the initiative communicating and she wont take the initiative to communicate with me. She won’t show me how she feels, very much like the High Priestess. So I should use the Minor Arcana & Major Arcana together if that’s what you mean, I just did a four card spread reading on the outcome of our relationship:

    (1) The Past – Three of Pentacles
    (2) Energies & Influences – Queen of Pentacles
    (3) Choices & actions – The Devil
    (4) The outcome – King of Wands

After that I verified it with a 6 card spread:

    (1) The Situation – King of Wands
    (2) Conflicts & Obstacles – Three of Cups
    (3) Changes Needed – Ten of Swords
    (4) Your Strengths – Temperance
    (5) Challenges – The Chariot
    (6) The Final Outcome – The Lovers

I think it seems clearer now using both major & minor arcana. So there’s a chance for commitment between us? With the Ten of Swords appearing, does it mean I need to change my perspective of this relationship, how I see her, instead of wanting her, I should sort of “let go”, relax & be myself, go slow, just continue to care about her?

With the Chariot, does it mean if I move too fast in the relationship it will hurt our connection, it’s better to build the relationship low & strong?

    What do you see 🙂

  29. Inger Bråthen July 22, 2017 at 2:19 pm

I think your interpretations are very good. Three of cups with The Chariot as challenge cards could mean there are trust issues blocking moving forward.

  30. Peter Law July 24, 2017 at 5:12 pm

Through your advice I am beginning to have a better understanding of tarot. Wow, this is so interesting, very insightful.
    So base on this reading:

    (1) The Situation – Page of Pentacles
    (2) Conflicts & Obstacles – King of Pentacles
    (3) Changes Needed – Page of Swords
    (4) Your Strengths – Knight of Wands
    (5) Challenges – Six of Pentacles
    (6) The Final Outcome – The Magician

with regards to our relationship, could King of pentacles mean a wealthy & successful competitor? or it just mean I need to be successful, so that’s my obstacle?

Page of swords means I need to be graceful and tactful about what I would have to face when facing obstacles?

Six of Pentacles as challenges means I or we need to be generous towards each other?

If these issues are met it will lead to a strong lasting commitment, the Magician? So, in this case since the Magician has appeared it signifies I have the ability to realize the outcome, And she is in fact my soulmate?

I’m thinking of roping her in as my partner to work on a project, I suppose it will help to smooth out our relationship..

    Wow 🙂

  31. Peter Law July 24, 2017 at 5:14 pm

    What do you see?

  32. Inger Bråthen July 25, 2017 at 7:44 am

Hi. King of pentacles can become the obstacle when there is too much focus on the material, and Page of swords is the antidote to that, because Page of swords is so much fun and always quirky, you can never really know what to expect. Knight of wands as your strength, affirms this, because the energy of this card is fun and adventure. Challenges is 6 of pentacles which is just like King of pentacles, basing too much on the material. The Magician speaks of the potential of a very fulfilling relationship.

  33. Peter Law July 25, 2017 at 12:25 pm

    Thanks Inger. You’re great. Cheers
