Symbolism in Hierophant tarot card

The Hierophant is greek for high priest. The two pillars symbolise support and structure. The Hierophant himself is pictured as the pope, symbolising organisation, institution and spiritual guidance. In his left hand, he holds a triple sceptre which symbolises domination over matter and emotion and thought. His three vestments symbolise purity, immortality and ritual. The triple crown symbolises the pope’s three functions: supreme pastor, supreme teacher and supreme priest. Three nails project from the top of his crown, symbolising Christ’s passion and sacrifice. The three crosses vertically down the pallium symbolise the holy trinity and that the Hierophant has Christ consciousness. Below the three crosses is a diamond symbolising the fourfold physical world. The crossed keys symbolise the crossed keys of heaven and represent the power of binding and loosing. The Hierophant placement between the two pillars creating the third pillar symbolising the three pillars of the tree of life. To the pillar to our right, the Pillar of Severity, he offers a blessing. To the pillar to our left, the Pillar of Mercy, he holds the triple cross of martyrdom. The Hierophant being the central pillar symbolises the Hierophant bridging heaven to earth. The two kneeling priests, one wearing chasuble decorated with roses and the other a chasuble decorated with lilies symbolising the union between flesh and spirit. Notice in a spread if the Hierophant is blessing the other cards. The Hierophant is ruled by Taurus.

The Hierophant tarot card reversed denotes prudence, silliness and hypocrisy. There are rules but no knowledge of why these rules are important. The ego is without guidance. There is an inflexibility in the system and in the people of the system. Perhaps it’s an institution who controls information and the leaders make themselves rich while the poor remains poor. Hello Inger!

I find myself overwhelmed with a reading I recently did and am hoping you might be able to help. I wanted to do a reading to help me make a decision about what I should focus my attention on (I don’t have the energy or focus to do both). I used a 9-card reading to look at possible outcomes of each choice. My question was: should I focus my energy on applying for jobs or should I focus my energy on my writing?

Cards 1, 2, & 3 = what may happen if I focus my energy on applying for jobs
Cards 4, 5, & 6 = what may happen if I focus my energy on my writing
Card 7 = possible outcome if I focus my energy on applying for jobs
Card 8 = possible outcome if I focus my energy on my writing
Card 9 = what I need to know before deciding

Here are the cards I pulled:
    1. Ace of cups
    2. Strength
    3. Knight of wands
    4. Tower
    5. Hermit
    6. Justice
    7. High Priestess
    8. Temperance
    9. Hierophant

So far, the only card I’ve really focused on is the Hierophant because he falls in the position that tells me what I need to know before I make my decision, and I think he wants me to know that I need to do the right thing for me, do what nourishes my soul. All these Majors are making me anxious, and I’m worried about being biased in my interpretations of them.

    Thanks for your time,
    Kayla

Dear Kayla. All the Majors mean you will be in the flow with the writing, and you will also have the energy to work. You will have success as a writer, however, I feel like the job you will have can give you motivation and inspiration to write. I also feel like you need security now. I do feel like you could be teaching workshops and also going abroad to learn.

    Dear Inger,

Thank you so much for your help. I value your insight. I also found your free course about the Fool’s Journey extremely helpful.

    Hello Inger,
I asked about my relatioship situation,Because I was a bit worried due to less cummunication lately.
It does look amazing, just wanted a bit more insight in terms
Of the combination (I did look up your combinations, but of course not all are listed). 🙂
I got King of Cups (hes a Cancer) ace of cups, ace of wands, hierophant and bottom six of wands.
I felt those things this weekend, but still none of these really talk about communication, or does it just mean that we “communicate” on a “feeling level” or that we show our affection with deeds (hence the wands)… .!?
How can it be improved? Thanks in advance and have a nice day,
    Cindy

Hi Inger! My question is about my soul mate…will he enter and stay in my life any time soon? I laid 3 cards sequentially. ..the hierophant, the king of cups and the lovers. I wanted to expand the reading and again placed beneath them another 3 cards sequentially and got the justice, the emperor and two of cups. Will be grateful for your insights! !

Yes, you will soon meet your soulmate….it will all move forward smoothly without any drama 🙂

The hierophant reversed can mean there are infidelities in the marriage.

    Hi inget,
I did a reading and got the 5 of swords, the knight of swords reversed and the hieorphant. Can you explain the message. Thx

  14. Inger Bråthen June 14, 2017 at 9:49 am

This card combination indicates you could be feeling very boxed in at the moment, and it also speaks of your path to freedom is education.

  15. TL June 27, 2017 at 2:35 pm

    Hi Inget,

I just did a love reading a received the following:

    Past – Heiorphant (reversed)
Present – Eight of Swords (reversed)
Future – Knight of Wands (upright)

Could you interpret what this means? Thank you

  16. Inger Bråthen June 27, 2017 at 7:56 pm

Hi. The confusion you have felt is almost over. Something has been very unclear, and someone maybe even dishonest. I also feel you will have a new and better routine in your life where you will feel more grounded and secure, as there seems to be a lack of security in your life at the moment. If you have worries about money, I feel a door is opening up in a field you are very passionate. I feel like you are using a lot of energy, physical energy, and there is a love connection coming in through where you are putting a lot of your energy, and this will take you by surprise as Knight of Wands often represents someone coming in when you least expect it and take you by storm. You have similar passions and interests and you will form a deep friendship that you can build on.

    Hi Inger!

    Lovers, heirophant, seven of wands

    Any insight? Thanks!

  18. Stephanie June 28, 2017 at 10:03 am

Sorry mean to say seven of pentacles not wands

  19. Inger Bråthen July 1, 2017 at 7:48 am

I feel this career change will bring you success. I also feel this career change aligns more with what you stand for and who you are. I also feel you will end up doing more study and expand on what you are doing. 🙂

  20. Lis July 22, 2017 at 4:17 am

    Hi Inger,
I did a 3 card reading but having a hard time interpreting them. My question is if I will get accepted to the University that I applied since May? I got temperance reverse, king of pentacles reverse and the hermit upright.

    Thank you

  21. Inger Bråthen July 22, 2017 at 2:12 pm

Hi. This might not be the right University for you since you got two out of three cards reversed.

  22. Kerstin August 3, 2017 at 5:40 pm

Hi Inger! Love your posts. Was wondering if you may be able to help me here. I’ve been thinking about totally changing my life and moving far away to be with this man I have been in a long distance relationship with. I asked if this would be a wise decision. Here’s what I got:

    1. Ace of swords
    2. Hierophant
    3. High Priestess

Now, we totally met by chance, and this man has managed to sweep me off my feet so to speak. I would have never even considered a long distance relationship in the past but there was just something about him and he felt the same way. We have had those ” deja vu” moments, and have had similar dreams about each other etc. Anyway, he’s begging for me to come out there but im scared, even though I feel like this will be a good relationship, if that makes since. Lol!

My take on this is the cards are telling me this is a right decision. He is religious and we have both said we feel as though ” God” or “Universe” is bringing us together for a reason. So… maybe our hunches are right and with the hierophant and high priestess appearing together, that is confirming that?

And as for the Ace of Swords, this is confirming that this new venture is wise and i have mental clarity? Lol

I would really appreciate your input to this confused beginner. Lol.

    Blessings to you, Inger. 🙂

  23. Inger Bråthen August 3, 2017 at 6:05 pm

Hi, Kerstin. I believe the cards are telling you to listen to your own inner judgment in this situation. How many times have you visited him? I feel this could be a good relationship as well, therefore, take care and don’t put too much pressure on you by moving before you have visited him a few times first.
