Symbolism in Tower tarot card

The Tower is square and the crown being knocked off is circular, symbolising that the knocking off the crown was exactly what was needed as a circle will never fit comfortably on a square in the first place. The 22 flames represent the 22 Major Arcana cards. The gray clouds symbolise the divine thought of “God” coming forth from source with a great desire to manifest the unmanifest. Gray symbolise a matter suppressed and in fear of exposure. The lightning symbolises bolts of truths. The lightning travels from left to right, symbolising the subconscious reaching the conscious, denoting a sudden awakening episode. The tower built on the uneven mountain represents ambition built on unsound premises. The two figures seeing falling to either side, a man in a blue tunic and a woman in a red cape, are Adam and Eve, freed from the chains seen in the Devil card. The background is black which links it further to the Devil card which has the same dark setting. The nigredo seen in the Devil card is now being cleansed and purified with fire, wind, and rain.

Tower in a general reading

The Tower tarot card represents disaster, emotional ‘meltdowns’ and/or tantrums, anger issues, upheaval and sudden change that are caused by disruption and revelations rocking the foundation of the person, household, organisation or even country, depending on the nature of the question. When the Tower is showing up it lets you know that you must face the truth about a situation or an issue to be able to have positive changes in your life. Living in illusion is not going to work. What would the Tower and The World card mean together?

  2. Inger Bråthen May 28, 2016 at 7:41 am

This card combination can mean a very competitive environment that shakes up the Seeker’s world. In travel, this card combination can mean the seeker will go somewhere they feel very out of place.

  3. Zeirine November 10, 2016 at 12:46 pm

What would the tower and the queen of cups cards mean together as future/outcome? Future card being the tower and outcome card being the queen of cups?

  4. Inger Bråthen November 10, 2016 at 2:49 pm

The tower could suggest an emotional event that rocks your foundation, but also spiral you towards a more spiritual and intuitive way of living (since queen of cups is the final card)….

  5. A January 17, 2017 at 11:29 pm

What would The Tower and The Ace of Cups mean together as feeling and the situation present and future in the relationship?

  7. Inger Bråthen February 4, 2017 at 3:53 pm

Hi, it can mean a surprise that ends up being a wonderful thing even though you might not see at such to start with 🙂

  8. Shelbi February 12, 2017 at 5:54 pm

Hello, I recently did a reading, and got the Tower Reversed as outcome, with the World next to it. With regards to returning to an unrequited love, involving a move as well. Thank you!!

  9. Inger Bråthen February 14, 2017 at 3:30 pm

Hi, I feel like the move will go well. The Tower is you learning to ride the waves of emotions that can be overwhelming. You are keeping together and you are changing your life for the better. I feel like you will be able to communicate properly how you really feel and getting things off your chest that have been bothering you. Once you have done this, you will have completion and you will feel so much better.

  10. jenny March 5, 2017 at 12:34 pm

Hello There Inger, In regards to somebody’s feelings, how would you describe the tower and page of swords ,i posted a snapchat of me and a male friend together as friends? (the person in question is also male and i am female)

  11. Inger Bråthen March 7, 2017 at 9:49 am

The tower with page of swords can mean that someone got upset and tries to find out more information about the situation.

  12. JANE March 17, 2017 at 2:09 am

The tower always unnerves me. I did seven. PAGE WANDS DEATH, 3 OF SWORDS AND TOWER. KING OF PENTACLES 7 WANDS AND 2 SWORDS. I am single so not break up. My mum is terminal. Might be it. My job stable. I am broke though. I just don’t now. Flummoxed. I know page of wands next to death means positive change but then 3 swords reinforces a sorrow due to change and the tower says something that scares me frankly. The tower next to pentacles suggest something bad in my job, but everything positive in this respect. But hard work and choices pending. Mostly because of the hideous death 3 swords and tower. This is third time 3 swords and tower showed up in a month. What is the message?

  13. Inger Bråthen March 17, 2017 at 7:15 am

Jane, the cards are telling that now is a time for you to spend with you mom as much as you can, because you might have regrets, especially if you have unfinished business. This process will be an awakening for you on a spiritual level that will actually help you in your career, as you will mature into a leadership role. Now is the time to clear out things, especially unresolved issues from the past. 🙂 Then you will have peace.

  14. JANE March 17, 2017 at 1:26 pm

Thank you so much for replying. It means that exactly. I don’t know why I didn’t see that. I am writer and writing about her actually. Very generous of you to respond. That woke me up Inger. Merci x

  15. Inger Bråthen March 18, 2017 at 2:42 am

Love and Light to you and your Mom! 🙂

  16. Jennifer April 17, 2017 at 2:17 am

    HI Inger!

What does the Tower + Wheel of Fortune mean in a reading? I had a reading done and the lady said in June I’d have the Tower and then the Wheel of Fortune?

    Thank you so much!

  17. Inger Bråthen April 17, 2017 at 6:50 am

Hi, Jennifer. I most likely will be a shakeup in your life that will turn out good for you in the long run 🙂

  18. Jennifer April 18, 2017 at 4:48 am

    Hi Inger again!

Thank you once again for answering my first question, I have another question, I received a tower + ace of cups reading for the 1st week of August, and a 2 of Cups + Queen of Cups reading for the 2nd week of August. On your chart it says Tower + Ace of Cups = An unexpected pregnancy. I can say with 100% surety that I will not be pregnant (abstinent and not in a relationship) lol, can this have another literal meaning? Also, the 2 of cups + Queen of Cups … do you know what that might mean.

    Thank you!

  19. Inger Bråthen April 18, 2017 at 7:26 am

Hi, Jennifer. Tower and ace of cups can also be a new relationship that will shake up your world…:) Two of cups next to Queen of cups can indicate you will fall in love in August and it will be a rush of emotions…:)

  20. Debbie April 30, 2017 at 5:10 am

What does the tower, the ace of pentacles and 3 of wands mean. I asked for an answer about a new job I’m supposed to start and am feeling I shouldn’t but I’m unemployed. What do these 3 cards tell me about my situation.

  21. Inger Bråthen April 30, 2017 at 5:18 am

It might be a bit stressful, to begin with, but then I feel it will lead you to something new that you will really enjoy.

  22. Amber May 1, 2017 at 9:43 am

Hi, I pulled Tower, Five of Swords, and Queen of Culs in regard to a relationship. Asked if I should stay with him, and got those cards, can you tell me what this means, please?

  23. Shannon May 9, 2017 at 1:28 am

I’ve been trying to find what it means for the upright 04 of cups and the reversed tower in a love reading. Do you have any insight?

  24. Ekkleen May 10, 2017 at 12:49 am

Hi i pulled 2 cards, the 1st one was the tower and the other one was three of pentacles. What does it means in career? Should I stick to my career or should i change it?

  25. Inger Bråthen May 10, 2017 at 7:05 am

Now might not be the best time to change career. I do feel things will improve where you are now….the tower is clearing a path for you and things will get better soon, I feel….

  26. Inger Bråthen May 10, 2017 at 7:28 am

Hi, this can mean that one person is hiding some hurt and heartache and is not letting it out…possibly internalising his/hers feelings…and wants/needs more communication about what is the core of the issue…

  27. Joanna Brannock May 14, 2017 at 9:52 pm

Hi I got the 9 swords ace of penticles and tower in a reading what does this mean please

  28. Inger Bråthen May 18, 2017 at 3:47 pm

Depends on the question, but something is causing stress in your life and it could be alot of pressure on you, especially in career.

  29. Ness May 19, 2017 at 4:04 am

What about the combination of ten of wands paired with the tower card, relationship wise?

  30. Inger Bråthen May 19, 2017 at 2:24 pm

Ten of wands with the tower speak of focusing on the spiritual bond between you. This relationship will change you both.

  31. Hariya June 1, 2017 at 3:35 am

What would reversed empress and reversed tower mean together ?

  32. Tanairi June 2, 2017 at 3:09 am

I got a reading with the tower, star reversed, the world reversed, three of cups, justice, hermit reversed … what does that mean?

  33. Inger Bråthen June 3, 2017 at 6:19 pm

Depends on the question. It could mean a revival of a relationship.

  34. Inger Bråthen June 3, 2017 at 6:24 pm

Depends on the question. You are getting a lot of Major Arcana cards which often mean there are a lot of flow in your life, but you might feel you are lacking specific direction. You need to be around like-minded people who you share the same interests with.

  35. Threethirty June 15, 2017 at 3:42 am

Hi, I asked for a guy’s feeling for me and got knight of swords tower knight of wands, what does it mean?

  36. Inger Bråthen June 16, 2017 at 8:06 pm

I feel he has passion for you, but at the same time he is feeling confused. I also feel he could be a bit unpredictable.

  37. Donna June 21, 2017 at 12:37 am

My reading had in “what I would experience” in the Celtic cross spread is the Devil, with clarification cards The Tower, Death and the Ace of Cups.

  38. AS June 27, 2017 at 9:19 pm

    hi Inger
what does Tower, chariot, and Nine of wands mean for feelings.
I asked what feelings my ex has for me and got this.
since we broke up in a catastrophic way and in a bad way totally unexpected- he was angry.
does the chariot mean he has contradictory feelings for me and he is trying to control his emotions and then the nine of wands also mean that he is protecting himself or is on his guard with me.
does this mean there is no reconcilation now possible as he is not willing to let his guard down with me?

  39. Inger Bråthen June 29, 2017 at 9:18 am

Hi, Tower and Chariot are both a 7 in numerology, and this adds a spiritual meaning to your relationship. I feel you both needs to heal and it might not be possible for you to heal together, but you can heal on your own. He most likely wants to feel a more spiritual connection to you, he wants to be with someone he can say is his kindred spirit. Prayer and positive affirmations can help heal this situation, but 9 of wands do indicate he is holding on to his pain and is not forgetting easily. If you are to approach him, it must be in a kind and non-confronting manner where he feels he is not under attack as he seems to be very defensive at the moment.

  40. A July 10, 2017 at 4:22 am

    Hi Inger,

I have a question regarding a two week reading I did for the 1st week of August.

The overall theme was the The Tower but
    the clarifying cards were:

    Queen of Swords
    7 of Coins (reversed)
    The Fool

I have no idea what this could mean and would really appreciate your interpretation and insight. Thank you!

  41. Inger Bråthen July 10, 2017 at 10:15 am

Hi. You could be starting a new path in your life, and it could be in your career. You need to look at your finances this period and if you being rewarded for your efforts.

Hi. Eight of swords with the tower can mean you need to keep a strong sense of self in this relationship, as this will keep you grounded and you will be able to avoid drama which can threaten the harmony and happiness this relationship could offer you. 🙂

  44. peter john July 24, 2017 at 8:36 am

  45. Philip July 24, 2017 at 10:52 am

9 of swords and the tower combo for why i cant get a job.
3 of pentacles when will i get a job.
any answr on the above will be helpful. :)PJ

  46. Inger Bråthen July 25, 2017 at 11:01 am

I feel when you stop worrying so much, you will get a job. This is about learning to control your emotions and have more inner peace in challenging circumstances. It is easy to have peace when everything is going well, but not so easy when faced with adversity. This is a lesson on a soul level. Once you feel you have gained emotional control, I feel you will be able to get a job with ease. 🙂

  47. peter john July 26, 2017 at 12:07 pm

    Thanks. I needed that 🙂

  48. Miss Grace August 4, 2017 at 2:33 am

I did a general reading – what will my future be? – and The Tower was in the Self position of the Celtic Cross. What does that mean, that a tragedy or crisis will happen to me, or I AM the Tower? Confusing. Other cards in the reading include:
    Position 2 (cross) – 9 cups
Position 4 (beneath) – The Star
    Position 7 (self) – Tower
Position 8 (home, environment) – The Emperor, Reversed
Position 10 (outcome) – Whell of Fortune
What do you make of this? Should I be worried? Tough one to interpret with all the major arcana cards. . . Thanks in advance for any insight you can give here! 🙂

  49. Inger Bråthen August 5, 2017 at 7:12 am

Hi. It could mean you are changing and dealing with something that was very unexpected that happened in your past. You could be now on high alert all the time, expecting something bad to happen again, or something very unexpected out of the blue that changes everything. I feel this has to do with your childhood and coming to terms with things that occurred in your childhood when you felt you perhaps didn’t have a lot of control in your life. It could have been a phase in your childhood. This can make it hard for you now to make a commitment which is why you get the emperor reversed in your home environment.

  50. Miss Grace August 5, 2017 at 7:58 am

Thank you. Childhood wasn’t perfect but not too bad compared to others. I did have a couple of really bad things happen 3 years ago within a few months of each other. Those experiences shook me to my core, having to do with relationship and home. I am just now recovering from them. I could relate some of what you said to how I felt/sometimes feel (less frequently now) after those incidents and people over which I had no control. I am hoping the Wheel of Fortune as the outcome means that something good will transpire. . . Interesting, I appreciate your insights.

  51. Inger Bråthen August 5, 2017 at 4:34 pm

Yes, Wheel of fortune is there to tell you that good things will come of it and you will be able to move forward and thrive 🙂

  52. A August 9, 2017 at 2:33 am

    Hi Inger,

For the last two weeks of September, the overall theme is the The King of Cups reversed but the clarifying cards are:

    2 of Swords (reversed)

I would love and very much appreciate your interpretation!

    Thank you so much!

  53. Aleksandra August 11, 2017 at 4:36 pm

    Hallo Inger
What does Tower, Death, 5 of Cups and Justice mean in the reading for unhappy married cuple?

    Thank you

  54. Inger Bråthen August 12, 2017 at 4:42 pm

This card combination can mean they have grown apart, however, the tower can mean that they are still very emotionally attached to the situation and making a decision about what to do can be difficult right now. There is a lot of grief attached to this situation.

  55. Anna Geldenhuys August 21, 2017 at 8:33 pm

    Hey Inger,
I got the Tower and Queen of Pentacles in a love reading asking about a guy that I’ve been chatting to but haven’t met for 5 months. What does this mean?

  56. Inger Bråthen August 22, 2017 at 7:49 am

Hi, Anna. The Tower with Queen of pentacles can mean the person is not quite what he seems online.

  57. Anita August 26, 2017 at 9:00 am

    Hello Miss Inger,
I asked question will the man I currently like, approach to me again next time when we meet for few months?
    I have got :
    1…. 3 OF CUPS
    2…. THE TOWER
    3…. 10 OF PENTACLES
    Help please if you can?
    Thank you in advance!

  58. G August 26, 2017 at 9:33 am

    Hi Inger,

I hope all is well on your end! If you pull the 2 of Swords (reverse), but then clarify it with the Justice and Tower card what do you interpret that as? I’d greatly appreciate your feedback! Thank you!

  59. Inger Bråthen August 28, 2017 at 7:12 am

2 of swords often shows up reversed when we are trying to keep the peace but we are unable to often due to things that are out of our control. Justice and Tower can mean someone in your life are creating some type of chaos and conflict and it is unfair and unjust.

  60. Inger Bråthen August 28, 2017 at 7:12 am

Hi. I feel yes, this person will approach you.

  61. Cynthia September 28, 2017 at 1:31 pm

Today in my daily reading I got the Star as the daily card, the 7 of Pentacles as the Past card, The Death card as the Present card and then the Tower as the future card. Tomorrows daily card is the Sun. I am looking for my soul mate or partner in life. Am currently seeing someone but he doesn’t contact me much but says he has strong feelings for me. I have feelings for him but am not happy with the lack of communication. He recently lost his job and is trying to decide what to do. I am also talking with someone new, online dating site, just talking but may meet today. It was just a general daily reading but a lil background as to what is going on.

  62. Inger Bråthen October 2, 2017 at 6:24 pm

Hi. The tower can mean your soulmate will come into your life very suddenly and things will change quickly. I drew a few cards for you as well. They show me a very energetic person who is in an authority role in his career and is always on the go. I feel there is a lot of drama even danger in his career somehow and it is taking a toll. That is the person the cards show me as your soulmate.

  63. jane October 16, 2017 at 4:22 pm

what does the 10 of cups, and tower and world and judgment and sun mean

  64. Inger Bråthen October 21, 2017 at 3:32 pm

It depends on your questions. The Tower is almost always about a spiritual awakening, especially when it shows up with Judgement.

  65. therealo October 27, 2017 at 4:50 pm

Today I’ve drawn the Tower and the King of Cups as daily cards. What does that mean? Thank you!

  66. Tiffany M October 29, 2017 at 11:43 am

Hello there! Was wondering if you might interpret a spread for me? I asked what was going to happen between me and a newish love interest. To give a little background he just told me yesterday that his ex told him she was pregnant by him (8 weeks) and that he was planning on being in the babies life, and i agreed that we could keep seeing each other. Today he told me she contacted him and may be having a miscarriage and he is understandably upset. I drew (past) Strength (present) 4 of Wands and (future) Tower (supporting) 3 of Swords. The outlook sounds very bleak? I hate that because I feel a strong connection with him. I sincerely appreciate any insight! Love and light

  67. Inger Bråthen November 1, 2017 at 10:32 am

It depends a bit on the questions, however, the tower next to a court card, especially a king, can mean someone’s character comes under question.

  68. Inger Bråthen November 1, 2017 at 11:20 am

This card combination can mean to take it slow and let things develop slowly. I feel there could be some arguments and they say to keep a cool head and not let your buttons get pushed. I feel you will be in the dark for a while what is going on, and you might not feel sure how you are truly feeling, which is why you will need some time to figure out how you truly feel about him.

  69. Marine November 2, 2017 at 3:57 pm

    Hi Inger,
    My question was
What should I work on today ?
    And I pulled
    1/ three of cups
    2/ The Tower

I don’t really know how to interpret this

Hi. How did your day go? Three of cups with the Tower can mean there is disruption with friends and in relationships.

Hi, this spread is telling me when and how I will meet the right one for me. I’m currently not dating anyone at the moment. I’ve been waiting on the right one and refused to settle for anything less. However, I will appreciate if you could help me with cards 2, 4, 5-6, 7, 8 and 9?

    1. State of your heart – this card describes the energy flow of your heart chakra at this point in time. It indicates how ready you are for true love. 10 of Pentacles

    2. Cupid’s arrow – this card tells you how Cupid’s arrow will strike. It indicates how you will meet. Knight of Swords (9 of Wands clarifier)

    3. Timing – this card gives you the most likely timing. The Star

    4. Best approach – this card shows you what you could start doing or should be doing more of right now in order to increase your chances of manifesting true love. 7 of Pentacles

5 – 6. Clues – these two cards provide clues about the personality, looks, profession etc for your future lover. The Hermit – King of Pentacles

    7. Sign – this card gives you a sign, something to bear in mind for your first meeting. Pay close attention to the visual symbol that stands out the most in this card. Whatever it is, say it out loud and allow your mind to free associate, writing down whatever pops into your head. Think about how this symbol relates to the qualities you wish for in a mate and take some more notes. Princess of Swords (I use the Journey into Egypt Tarot for this position)

    8. Avoid – this card shows you something you should avoid completely or do considerably less of if you wish to manifest true love. The Temperance (2 of Pentacles Clarifier)

    9. Capitalise on this! – this card shows you a strength or asset that you should bring to the fore when you start building your new relationship. The Hierophant (The Tower Clarifier)

Hi, Desiree. Knight of swords in how you will meet can indicate you will meet through another person. It can also mean you will meet through an intellectual pursuit. 9 of wands as clarifier can mean this is something challenging that will give you a great sense of achievement. 7 of pentacles I feel strengthen this as it speaks of long-term investments that will pay off in the future. The hermit and king of pentacles speak of your soulmate being a very grounded person who is an old soul. Princess of swords speaks of two minds who think alike. There will be a high degree of mental compatibility. Temperance as doing less of can mean you are in a routine that you repeat a lot that is taking up a lot of your time (two of pentacles often means repeating a pattern), so think about changing your routine which will also bring in new people in your life. The hierophant speaks of your strength of character, even amongst the most challenging times (the tower). 🙂

Hi. Wonder if you can assist. I have been dating a guy for about 4 mnths, It has been somewhat turbulent as we both navigate the changes in our lives. recently it seems things are better ? I pulled the following cards – in this order. Ace Swords, 5 wands, The star , The Tower, Ten of cups. Then asked how he is feeling about me right now and got the Ace of cups. Not sure what to make of the tower in the mix. We went through a small break – well I have been away alot and so has he. I am a Cancerian Sun, Aquarian Moon , and he is a Leo Sun and Scorpio Moon. Not sure if any of the cards are related ? Would greatly appreciate your feedback. Thank you with Kindness. I often pull the king of wands too regarding this man ( i see this as a bad sign ? )

Hi, Lisa. I would love to do numerology on you two if you give me your dobs. You can do so privately here:
Scorpio moon people tend to be very intense and with his leo in the mix he could be a bit self-absorbed. I am a numerologist and will know more when I see the numbers. The cards you get shows you have a strong connection, and this can be both good and bad. The highs and the lows may suit him due to his scorpio moon (makes him feel alive), but it might not suit you emotionally (aquarian Moon).

Hi. I got the tower and 8 of wands as the answer to “why isn’t this relationship going forward?” and I’m not sure how to interpret it? Any suggestions?. Thanks

8 of wands next to negative cards such as the tower can mean ill temper is at the heart of this. The tower also can also mean outburst behaviour. Feelings could be running high in this relationship making it hard to move forward, especially harmoniously.
