Hanged Man in a general reading

The Hanged Man represents being temporarily suspended. Life is on hold, but it serves a purpose. While you are being suspended you gain a whole new perspective, and this perspective is necessary for you to gain the insight and enlightenment necessary to take you to your next level. If you were to get hanged, what thoughts would flood your mind? The Hanged Man speaks of the kind of clarity you have just before you are about to lose it all. You would suddenly know what was of true importance, how much you love the people in your life and even love for life itself. Hanged Man tells you to reflect upon what is truly important to you, without having to have a near-death experience. By being temporarily inactive, just observing, seeing things in a new way, from someone who knows how important life is, a spiritual side will evolve and a thirst for more spiritual knowledge. The Hanged Man does not get grounded and balanced through putting his feet on the ground; instead, he achieves it through putting his head towards the ground where he starts to listen to the voice of life.

The Hanged Man as feelings

The Hanged man speaks of feeling inspired and ‘lit up’ in a way that is hard for the Seeker to explain to others. The Seeker is often misunderstood and also excluded at times, however, the Seeker feels enthusiastic about what they already have. The Seeker knows that they are only experiencing a temporary pause, and they patiently await for their time to come. They love deeply, but they are not yet ready to act on their feelings. They instead are observing everything carefully.

If you are asking how someone is feeling about you, The Hanged Man can mean the person has withdrawn a bit and is acting a bit distant. They need to focus on other things at the moment. They want peace and quiet in their life to look within themselves. They are not going anywhere, they are just in deep thought and meditation at the moment.

Today I have looked up the meaning of the Hanged Man because he appeared to me briefly as I was drifting off to sleep last night. He was hanging from a tree (very like one of the huge Moreton Bay Fig Trees which are in the harborside parks I walk in most evenings). He was hanging with rope around one foot and with his other leg in the crossed position.

  2. Bernd November 30, 2015 at 6:25 am

The hanged man and the king of wands – the modern man. I find it hard to see the relation of the cards with this term. Could you please elaborate a bit what you mean by that? What kind of advice would this card combination mean on a personal level, or for a future developement?

  3. Inger Bråthen November 30, 2015 at 6:32 pm

I meant a sophisticated man, someone who is emotionally mature.

Do i hang tight or make a move tonight and will i get the out come i ever so hope for from A?

  5. Illona Jameson March 25, 2017 at 11:59 am

Hello Inger, I did a three card spread no special place for each card. I just asked a question and then thought about it for a few minutes and then dealed the cards. My question was “Is there anything that the cards feel I need to know” And the cards I deal was 1. The World, 2. The Wheel of Fortune, 3. The High Priestess I am not that good with the cards like I want but I will get there. I would like to know if I am on the right track with what I came up with for the cards that came up. The World the cycle is complete, it is time for me to start a new which is writing, That maybe there may be a trip in the future or a move. The Wheel of fortune a good card things are starting to fall into place, The High Priestess doing what I think that I should be doing and that is writing at the moment that there is going to be some changes in me. So what they are saying to me is that I should be writing and it will be ok. The money thing that I have been worried about will be ok, because there is going to be some kind of changes for the good. Thanks so much Illona

Hi, I feel like you will be doing a lot of research as part of your writing, and you could be traveling to a place where you have a past life connection. This is a place you would have been drawn to from early childhood even. If you can’t travel there, this place will still be a source of inspiration for you as you will be able to research this place, however, I feel you will travel there. The High priestess can be a female ancestor guiding you, and the cards are telling you that when you meditate, you will be able to feel this person around you. This person would have had some psychic gifts most likely and is influencing your life now by almost being like a spirit guide. I pulled some cards for you, and I got three x Tens (Wheel of fortune which is a ten in numerology, ten of cups, and ten of wands), and three x tens can mean publishing, and getting a lot of recognition. The card that followed was the Magician, so I think you have some unique skills and talents that the cards and the female ancestor want you to acknowledge so that you believe in yourself 100 % !! This is part of your destiny 🙂

  7. Illona Jameson April 17, 2017 at 3:36 am

Hello Inger I just seen the reply this morning. I am thinking about writing about serial killers. I have been doing a lot of research on Jack the Ripper and the Serial Killer here in South central California. They are two very interesting men. So I can agree with that. But my first book will be something like a self help book for women. I do believe that the past life place you are talking about is England. Since I can remember that is a place that I want so much to live. So if I am on the right track it is England. And the female you are talking about I think is my great great grandmother. She was from New Orleans but she believed in a lot of the mystical things. I think that is where I get that from. Wow that is amazing how you pulled the Wheel of fortune and Magician card because lately they have been two cards that have been in just about all of my spreads. I truly believe that I am on the right track with the writing and teaching myself how to read the tarot. Thank you so much for your help and blessings to you Illona.

  8. donna April 24, 2017 at 4:58 am

Hi Inger. I asked how a man felt about me that I haven’t seen or heard from in a year, if he still had feeling s & got the hanged man crossed by ace of cups with ace of swords above, 6 wands next ending in judgment as outcome in a Celtic cross spread. This really confused me. I Think I know the first part, (we never got any where because he never called). What does the rest men? Thank you

  9. Inger Bråthen April 24, 2017 at 10:48 am

Hi. Ace of cups with the Judgement often means feelings are there but buried. You might have to be the one reaching out…

  10. Rae May 22, 2017 at 1:01 pm

Inger, I did a 3-card spread with the question of wether of not I should forgive someone for something they had said to me… This thing had me feeling like my world went upside down, because he was a good friend of mine. Anyways, I drew the cards in this order, 1.) Hanged man (upright), 2.) Five of Rods (reversed), 3.) Nine of Rods (reversed). Can you help me figure this out? I welcome any advice/details, thanks.

  11. Rae May 22, 2017 at 1:04 pm

Also, this is not the first time he really betrayed my trust… Im not making a big deal, a lot of my friends disagreed with me even having the thought to forgive him.

  12. Inger Bråthen May 22, 2017 at 2:12 pm

Hi. I think you should forgive this person, but not have this person in your life. Forgive for your own peace of mind, and move on to experience better friendships….:) Hanged man upright looking at Five of rods reversed and Nine of rods reversed mean you have the right instincts and insight into this person who was in the wrong. 🙂

  13. Sally July 2, 2017 at 2:34 am

  15. Charity July 6, 2017 at 3:47 pm

Hello, I just bought a new deck of tarot cards and have been familiarizing myself with the meanings of each one. I did a 3 card spread with the question of “What should I know about my career path or calling?” Card 1: Hanged man, Card 2: The Moon and Card 3: Two of swords reversed. Based on your definitions above I am a “creative genius”who is stuck between a rock and a hard place. It’s been hard for me to make a decision about what path to take and I’ve have some mental confusion. I am a singer, but have had some troubles in getting things going. Can you offer any advice or suggestions? Thanks

  16. Inger Bråthen July 7, 2017 at 7:45 pm

If you are a singer, and you get this card combination then you must write your own songs, especially love songs.

  17. Kwasi September 11, 2017 at 9:30 pm

does anyone know what does combination of the card of superior achievement, the hanged man and the word mean?

  18. Tenneil September 15, 2017 at 4:21 am

Hi Inger I asked if I will get pregnant this month of September and pulled the page of wands the tower the hanged man and four of wands, I feel it might mean be shocked that it comes unexpectedly? Could you tell me what it means please?

  19. Inger Bråthen September 17, 2017 at 6:35 am

Hi. You could be feeling impatient indicated by the tower next to hanged man. Hanged man often shows up when you are waiting so it can mean it might not happen this month.

  20. V. September 18, 2017 at 3:10 pm

I made an “advice-spread” about my relationship. There is to much reversed cards, and it annoys me a bit… :/ I’d like to ask for your help.

    questions and answers:
The best thing I can do for our relationship/each other:
    reversed Five of Wands

The best thing I can do for myself, to be happy /do my best in our relationship:
    reversed Queen of Wands

The best thing I can do to make him happy in our relationship:
    Four of Pentacles

With what could I cause him the biggest joy:
    The Hanged Man

The most important thing to know and to do in the relationship now:
    reversed Six of Wands

An advice from the cards for me:
    Eight of Swords

    Thanks a lot!

  21. Inger Bråthen September 20, 2017 at 3:03 pm

Hi. When a lot of reversed cards show up it is a good time to take a step back and review things. Five of wands reversed can mean you have both lost yourself a bit in this relationship and you must find your own unique individual self again.

  22. R. September 22, 2017 at 12:00 am

I got the hanged man clarified by the queen of wands as my boyfriends feelings for me however, in your description, it just says “a counselor. A healer.” Can you elaborate on that for me? Does this means he thinks I have healing qualities?

  23. Inger Bråthen September 25, 2017 at 5:20 pm

Hanged man as feelings can mean the person has pulled back and is observing the situation to see how things will develop.

  24. Toerag September 27, 2017 at 9:05 pm

Hi Inger I just want to check in and leave my hugest cloud of love and light, amazement and gratitude for having you running your site the way you do, it’s a one of a kind site and one of a kind experience bless you to all the heavens and back xxxxxxx shenanigans

  25. Inger Bråthen October 1, 2017 at 3:53 pm

Oh Wow!!! Thank you so much!!! You made my day!!! 😀

  26. Martina October 9, 2017 at 12:54 am

Hi Inger, what would Judgement, Queen of swords reversed and the magician mean please as overall theme?

Also the world and hanged man reversed as a lesson learned

And 8of Pentacles, temperance reversed and 7of cups reversed means as what to focus on please?

Thank you for the site, it has been such gem! X

  27. Inger Bråthen October 10, 2017 at 7:37 pm

Hi. Judgement can mean the other two cards have something to do with your past, especially when it comes to your personality and being yourself. Maybe you have felt you had to hide part of your personality away (queen of swords reversed), and now you are slowly recovering yourself and becoming the person you were always meant to be (the magician). The world with the hanged man speaks of how you see the world and to remember your soul purpose and not to change just to fit in. There is a special place for you in the world and if you are yourself and honest with yourself it will take you there. 8 of pentacles, temperance reversed and 7 of cups reversed also speak of your past I feel. An important part (could be a skill/talent) from your past will be applied to your life in a very specific way. 🙂

  28. Gee November 5, 2017 at 7:46 am

    Hi Inger,

I hope your weekend has been going well! I have a question, for the last two weeks of November, the overall theme I got was the Hanged man, however, it was clarified with the Moon (reversed), 3 of Pentacles (reversed), and the 2 of pentacles.
I would greatly appreciate your interpretation of this card combination.

    Thank you so much!

  29. Inger Bråthen November 6, 2017 at 4:02 pm

Take the time in November to think about what is really important to you. There is a creative side to you that I feel needs to be expressed more and there is a hobby you could even turn into a career. Write a list what your future dreams are, especially in regards to your creativity and personal development, taking more time to do the things that makes you really relaxed, inspired, happy, and fulfilled.

  30. Michie November 23, 2017 at 8:34 pm

    Thank you. You are blessed

  31. Fernanda June 22, 2018 at 8:33 pm

    Dear Ingie,

in a love reading I’ve got the hanged man as an outcome.
It’s a triangle relationship at the moment and I feel trapped, I dont know what to do – I cannot cope with a double life anymore.I want to be honest and kind and coherent with everybody. I wanted to tell him about my feelings and that I can’t go on with this.
    Here are the positions:
    Past: three of swords
    Present: the moon
Future: seven of pentacles (he has a flower shop and he works with gardens)
    Potential: Page of Pentacles
    Setbacks: Justice
    Environment: Three of Pentacles
    Outcome: The Hanged Man

My understanding is that I cannot do anything right now. That I have to wait.
But the three of pentacles was a bit confusing as well.
    Could you help me?
Thank you for everything, have a lovely weekend

  32. Ingie from TW June 24, 2018 at 1:44 pm

The reason it is hard to break with this person is due to your communication. A strong mental connection is showing up in your cards. 3 of pentacles as environment could suggest a working relationship in the future.
